Our favorite hotels
The Mercer – New York (US)
This has been our base in New York for the last fifteen years and is still the best hotel in the city. The rooms are loft-like, with beautiful furniture by Christian Liaigre, and the bathrooms even bigger. Boutique hotel with helpful staff and a good restaurant in the basement.
Le Quartier Français – Franschhoek (ZA)
This boutique hotel in Franschhoek has become a home away from home for us. Chef Margot Janse, owner Susan Huxter and the staff have become our African family. Book Margot’s restaurant The Tasting Room at least three months in advance, since it has been in San Pellegrino’s list of best restaurants in the world for years.
Clouds Estate – Stellenbosch (ZA)
Clouds Estate has the best location in South Africa, on the panoramic road between the historic towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands. This modern estate has both guestrooms and self-catering villas. Beautifully decorated rooms with furniture by Linteloo and Moooi, on a hillside producing award-winning wines. www.cloudsestate.com
Ulusaba Safari Lodge – Sabi Sands (ZA)
This lodge is in the Sabi Sands private nature reserve on the border of the Kruger National Park. Stay a couple of nights to experience ‘the big five’ on the morning or evening game drives and enjoy the luxury suites with colonial furniture. www.ulusaba.virgin.com
De Lindenhof – Giethoorn (NL)
Martin Kruidhof is the Michelin-starred chef and his wife Marjan the hostess of this beautiful inn and restaurant in the Dutch countryside. The village Giethoorn is known for its many bridges and Bert Haanstra’s 1958 film Fanfare, which captured a time that you can relive with the great food in this restaurant. Stay the night in one of the suites furnished by Linteloo and Martin will serve you the best breakfast that you have ever had in your life. Promise! www.restaurantdelindenhof.nl
Conservatorium Hotel – Amsterdam (NL)
Our favourite place to stay in Amsterdam, with beautiful rooms by architect and designer Piero Lissoni, and chef Schilo van Coevorden’s restaurant Tunes. Conveniently located near all the major museums and with the Spiegelkwartier, awash with antique shops and galleries, within walking distance. www.conservatoriumhotel.com
